Jahmyr Gibbs Sends Clear Message About David Montgomery’s Future

Jahmyr Gibbs has made it clear what will ultimately determine David Montgomery’s future with the Detroit Lions.

After a frustrating season in which he posted career-low numbers, Lions running back David Montgomery appeared increasingly unhappy with his limited role in the offense. Despite discussions about improving his workload, no long-term changes followed.

During his end-of-season press conference, Lions general manager Brad Holmes was asked directly whether Montgomery would be back in 2026. Holmes delivered a blunt and honest response.

“Obviously, I know it was a tough year for him in terms of the lack of touches,” Holmes said. “I’m not going to say I went into it planning for it to be that way. So, those are discussions that we’re going to have to have more depth in terms of what’s the best plan for him moving forward. Is that somewhere else, or whatever the case may be.”

Holmes added that he hopes Montgomery remains with the team but acknowledged the possibility of a departure.

“I really appreciate everything he’s done for us if it does go that way, but I hope it doesn’t. We love David Montgomery. Those are conversations we’re going to have.”

Montgomery addressed trade speculation during Super Bowl week by speaking in “we” terms about the Lions, seemingly downplaying the idea of leaving Detroit. However, Holmes’ comments made it clear that Montgomery’s wishes will play a major role in the decision.

Jahmyr Gibbs Addresses David Montgomery’s Future

Gibbs and Montgomery have formed a close bond as Detroit’s “Sonic and Knuckles” backfield duo over the past three seasons.

While attending the Pro Bowl Games, Gibbs spoke with Detroit Free Press reporter Dave Birkett about Montgomery’s future.

“Of course I want David back,” Gibbs said. “The whole team would want David back, but it’s ultimately up to him. He’s going to do what’s best for him and his family and whatever he decides to do I’m going to support 100%. But of course we want him back.”

Gibbs’ comments echoed Holmes’ earlier statements: Montgomery’s future with the Lions will largely depend on what the veteran running back wants.

There is also the possibility that Gibbs is aware of Montgomery’s mindset behind the scenes. Regardless, his comments perfectly captured the reality of the situation.

What This Means for the Lions

Detroit’s decision on Montgomery could reshape the backfield heading into the 2026 season. While the Lions would prefer to keep their proven power runner alongside Gibbs, they appear willing to honor Montgomery’s wishes if he requests a trade or change of scenery.

In the end, Jahmyr Gibbs summed it up best: David Montgomery’s future in Detroit is in his own hands.
