Jameson Williams just stirred controversy with his latest Instagram activity

30 targets, 289 receiving yards, 17 catches, and only two touchdowns summarize Jameson Williams’ season so far with the Detroit Lions. The talented wideout, who earned an extension this past offseason, has largely been an afterthought in offensive coordinator John Morton’s scheme this year.

With Jahmyr Gibbs’ workload increasing and Jared Goff continually favoring Amon-Ra St. Brown through the air, Williams has become the odd man out. He’s still valuable as one of Detroit’s strongest downfield blockers, but a player with his explosiveness shouldn’t be limited to that role alone.

Williams’ growing frustration with this limited usage has now come to light, and heading into the bye week, he’s created fresh tension within Morton’s offense through his recent Instagram posts.

Williams showing frustration with Morton’s play calls before the bye week

In Week 7, Gibbs finished with more receiving yards than Williams — not a major concern given the win, but anyone who watched could tell it wasn’t Detroit’s offense that sealed the deal. The defense, loaded with reserves, completely bottled up possible MVP candidate Baker Mayfield and his comeback efforts.

Gibbs carried the offense with his running, supported by the offensive line, but Goff had trouble finding both Williams and St. Brown all game. Williams managed one catch that was negated by a questionable offensive pass interference penalty. It was just another night of frustration.

It’s unclear why Williams hasn’t been featured more prominently in this offense. Gibbs is rightfully a centerpiece of Detroit’s scheme, but adding some unpredictability — like avoiding the constant first-down runs — could open things up. That would allow Williams to play a far bigger role, yet he’s been blanketed in coverage each week with few opportunities.

Morton called an excellent game back in Week 2, and Detroit’s 5-2 record speaks for itself, so major complaints are difficult to justify. Still, entering the bye, it’s obvious that their biggest concern remains how stagnant the offense can appear at times due to limited creativity from Morton and Goff. Williams has the talent to change that, so his frustration over being ignored week after week is easy to understand.
