Jameson Williams Keeps Rising for Detroit: “He’s Doing Everything Right”

DETROIT — Jameson Williams is putting together the most consistent stretch of his career, hauling in a personal-best seven receptions in consecutive games as his role in the Detroit Lions’ offense continues to expand.

Against the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night, Williams turned those seven catches into 96 yards, playing a major part in Detroit’s important 44–30 win.

The speedy wideout drew nine targets in the matchup — one week after seeing a season-high 10 opportunities on Thanksgiving. Although Amon-Ra St. Brown’s ankle injury bumped Williams into more WR1 responsibilities last week, both receivers ended up logging 57 snaps apiece against Dallas. Quarterback Jared Goff repeatedly looked in Williams’ direction, and the offense reaped the rewards.

After the game, Goff didn’t hide his admiration for Williams’ performance. He emphasized how their trust has reached a new level and how Williams’ energy is becoming a driving force for the unit.

“He’s turning into the player we always believed he could be,” Goff said. “Right now, he’s as dependable as anyone I’ve ever worked with. Third down, fourth down — whatever the moment demands — he shows up.

“He brings juice. He’s confident, dialed in, and doing everything right. It’s really fun to watch.”

Goff has used similar praise in the past when speaking about St. Brown, which highlights how far Williams has come as both a route-runner and a featured weapon.

The Lions took more deep shots versus Dallas than they have in weeks, largely because Williams has proven he can win downfield and operate as a primary option. He currently leads the league in yards gained on crossing routes — a dangerous development for defenses, considering how easily he can turn those plays into long gains.

While Williams has had two games this season without a catch and four games with three or fewer targets, his big-play profile has always made him a boom-or-bust option. Now, he’s finding steadiness without losing the explosiveness that makes him special.

He has scored in four of his last six outings and has topped 66 receiving yards in five of his past six, including three games with receptions of 40 yards or more. Since the team’s bye week, he leads the Lions with 417 receiving yards — an impressive feat even with a no-catch game mixed in.

With tight end Sam LaPorta sidelined, Williams’ ability to produce on critical downs has become even more important. Yes, he had the memorable fourth-down drop on Thanksgiving, but Goff’s unwavering confidence shows how much Williams has earned his trust. Since head coach Dan Campbell took over offensive play-calling five games ago, Williams has consistently been a focal point. Even his recent zero-catch game against the Giants included three targets and a long reception nullified by a penalty.

Campbell himself echoed the rising confidence earlier in the week.

“Confidence is high — really high,” Campbell said. “He’s developing fast. He’s fearless, completely fearless. His footwork and his ability to drop his weight in routes have taken a huge step. For someone with that kind of speed, he’s becoming very tough to defend.

“You can see his run-after-catch ability too. His confidence is going up, ours is going up, and he’s performing really well. He came into this week flying around in practice. The guy works. Every single day. We love what he’s becoming.”
