If anyone still needed confirmation that Jahmyr Gibbs is blossoming into a full-fledged star, Detroit’s quarterback put all doubt to rest.
Following the Lions’ chaotic 34–27 overtime victory over the New York Giants, Jared Goff didn’t hold back. He said Gibbs isn’t just fun to watch — he’s turning into one of the most dangerous players in the entire league. And according to Goff, that walk-off 69-yard touchdown? He knew right away the Giants were finished.
Goff: Gibbs Is Becoming One of the NFL’s Elite
Goff’s praise was the type usually reserved for long-term centerpieces.
“Man, that guy is as good as it gets in this league,” Goff told Lions OnSI. “He’s making a real case as one of the best players in football — at any position — and we’re lucky he’s here. He’s insanely explosive.”
Detroit’s offense sputtered for most of the afternoon, but every time they needed someone to inject life into the unit, Gibbs delivered in huge moments.
“For him to give us that spark while we were struggling, that was massive.”
This wasn’t Gibbs simply playing well. This was Gibbs keeping Detroit’s season from stalling out.
Why Defenses Panic the Second Gibbs Touches the Ball
Goff says you can feel the tension from opposing defenses when Gibbs gets the rock.
.“You can sense it — tons of urgency. The defense rallies like crazy because they know what he can do.”
Once Gibbs breaks into the open field? Forget it.
“When he hits that second level, you can see the angles defenders take, and you know it’s trouble for them.”
Goff added that Gibbs is improving rapidly as a receiver, too.
“He’s getting sharper with his routes, his hands are great, and he keeps getting more comfortable.”
He even joked that he kept feeding Gibbs because the guy was simply unstoppable.
“As a quarterback you’re trying to distribute the ball, but when one guy is rolling like that… yeah, maybe I went to him one too many times.”
When your quarterback can’t stop giving you the ball, you’ve officially hit superstar status.
Goff Says He Knew the 69-Yard Overtime Run Was a Done Deal Within Seconds
Detroit opened overtime with one of their go-to running plays, following Penei Sewell and rookie Tate Ratledge. As soon as Gibbs slipped through the initial crease, Goff already knew what was coming.
“I think I threw my hand up by the time he was about seven yards downfield,” he said.
“You could see the route he was taking and the angle the safety had — it was done.”
He even noted that Giants safety Dane Belton is no slouch.
“Number 24 is not slow at all… and Jah just pulled away from him. He’s on another level.”
Translation: Gibbs didn’t just outrun a good athlete — he made him look like he was stuck in mud.
Gibbs Isn’t Quiet — He Just Doesn’t Talk Much on Camera
Some fans assume the young running back is shy. Goff says that’s not the case in the locker room.
“With us, he’s totally normal — talkative, engaged. He’s a great teammate who works his butt off and does everything the right way.”
The soft-spoken act? That’s only for the cameras.
Detroit Has a Legit Star — and the Whole League Knows It
Jahmyr Gibbs isn’t trending upward. He’s already arrived.
He’s frightening defenses. He’s delivering explosive plays on command. He’s winning games Detroit must have.
And according to the quarterback who sees it closest, the hype isn’t manufactured — it’s real:
Gibbs is turning into one of the absolute best players in the NFL.
