Jets Head Coach Aaron Glenn Parts Ways With Defensive Coordinator After Lopsided Defeat
With only three games remaining in the regular season, New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has reshaped his coaching staff, dismissing defensive coordinator Steve Wilks on Monday.
The move came one day after New York suffered its most decisive loss of the year, falling 48–20 to the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 15. The Jets’ defense struggled throughout the game, allowing 438 total yards. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence threw for 330 yards, while running back Travis Etienne Jr. accounted for 105 combined yards and found the end zone three times.
That 28-point defeat marked the largest margin by which the Jets have lost this season.
Speaking to reporters Monday, Glenn explained that the decision was driven by a lack of progress on the defensive side of the ball.
“From last week to this week, I didn’t see the growth we needed,” Glenn said. “As the head coach, it’s my responsibility to constantly evaluate what’s happening and do what’s best for this organization. After looking at everything, I felt this was the right moment to make a change.”
Glenn said the choice was finalized Sunday night, and Wilks was informed Monday morning before Glenn addressed the media.
Statistically, the decision aligns with the Jets’ defensive performance this season. New York ranks last in the league in takeaways with just three, all coming on fumble recoveries. They are also the only NFL team that has yet to record an interception. Additionally, the Jets are allowing the third-most points per game at 28.3 and surrender the fourth-most rushing yards per contest at 137.2.
Before taking the Jets’ head coaching job, Glenn spent four seasons as the Detroit Lions’ defensive coordinator. To replace Wilks on an interim basis, Glenn promoted defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator Chris Harris.
Harris, a former NFL defensive back with eight years of playing experience, also had a brief stint with Detroit during the 2011 season, appearing in eight games.
While Glenn said he will assist Harris during preparation this week, Harris will take full responsibility for calling the defensive plays when the Jets face the New Orleans Saints in Week 16—a matchup against Glenn’s former team.
“I’m looking for steady progress,” Glenn said. “Consistency in our structure, consistency in how we play, and consistency in who we are as a team. I want to see the identity and culture of this group come together.”
