Kelly Stafford Breaks Down Over Daughter’s Struggles: ‘She’s Not the Same Girl’

Kelly Stafford is opening up to fans about the tougher side of motherhood – and the emotions that come with it.

The 36-year-old got emotional on the Thursday, August 28, episode of her and Hank Winchester’s “The Morning After” podcast as she talked about one of her daughters’ recent behavior struggles. (Kelly and Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford are parents to twins Sawyer and Chandler, 8, Hunter, 7, and Tyler, 5.)

“One of my daughters I have really, really been struggling with. Matthew as well. She has turned into a little girl I don’t know. At this point, I’m trying to keep it calm,” Kelly shared, explaining that her issues go beyond home and “seeped into” her daughter’s sports, where she’s been “ignoring coaches, showing attitude, walking away while they’re speaking to her.”

Kelly explained that the family had been invited to a cookout, but she told her daughter she would not be allowed to go if she kept misbehaving. On the morning of the event, she overheard a painful moment between her kids.

“Tyler told her, ‘Wow, you look so pretty in that outfit.’ It was so sweet. And [my other daughter] turned, looked her up and down, I watched it, and she goes, ‘You look disgusting,’” Kelly recalled.

Kelly then sent her to her room while the rest of the family went to the cookout. Afterward, she and her daughter walked to and from school, thirty minutes each way. On their way back, Kelly sat her daughter down for a serious talk, and emotions poured out.

“I’m like, ‘I’ve tried everything. I’ve sat outside your room. I’ve taken things away. I’ve tried talking to you like the young lady you are. Nothing works. I’m drained.’ And I told her, ‘It’s not fair to your sisters that all of my time now goes to you every day because you’re acting out,’” she continued. “‘You’re causing problems. I don’t know if it’s for attention. Tell me, do you need more of me?’”

Kelly said her daughter began to sob and admitted, “I don’t know why I’m so bad.”

When they got home, Kelly warned her that if she misbehaved again, she would be walking to and from school to think about her choices. Sadly, another situation happened days later, and Kelly stood by her word – though it broke her heart.

“I cried the entire damn walk while she went home. Yes. And my girls cried when I left her, but I just didn’t know what else to do,” she said, holding back tears. “And I don’t know if it’s because I compare her to sisters who are so sweet and thoughtful and try to be. And people always say, ‘Oh, one kid will rebel. You’ll have one who drifts.’ … First, I don’t believe that. And second, I refuse to let that happen.”

Winchester reassured Kelly that she and Matthew, 37, are “wonderful” parents who are “just doing their best to do the right thing.”

“So wipe away those tears, kiddo. It’s going to turn out fine. We’re all in this with you,” Winchester encouraged.
