Lions add veteran slot cornerback to their practice squad

The Detroit Lions continue to strengthen their secondary depth following a series of injuries. Per a report from NFL Network’s Cameron Wolfe, the Lions are signing veteran defensive back Arthur Maulet to their practice squad.

Maulet, 32, enters his eighth NFL season after going undrafted in 2017. He began his career with the New Orleans Saints, where he spent most of his first two seasons with Dan Campbell, appearing in seven games, primarily on special teams.

His career took off after that, as he logged two productive years (2019-20) with the New York Jets, playing in 23 games and starting 11. During that stretch, he totaled seven passes defended, two interceptions, 67 tackles, and one fumble recovery.

He later suited up for the Steelers for two seasons (33 games, eight starts) and the Ravens for another two (17 games, three starts). Maulet most recently spent the offseason with the Houston Texans but was released during final roster cuts.

Throughout most of his career, Maulet has operated as a nickel cornerback, which aligns with his 5-foot-10, 190-pound frame. His physicality and willingness to defend the run have been key strengths of his game.

Detroit is desperate for reinforcements at cornerback right now. Although starters D.J. Reed and Terrion Arnold are both expected to return in a few weeks, the team remains without them—and Khalil Dorsey—for the time being. Currently, the only healthy corners on the 53-man roster are Amik Robertson, Rock Ya-Sin, and Avonte Maddox. Maulet joins a depth group that also features Erick Hallett, Trey Flowers, and Nick Whiteside.
