Lions Could Land NFL Sack Leader in $50 Million Free-Agent Deal

The Detroit Lions failed to meet their Super Bowl expectations in 2025 after missing the playoffs entirely, raising concerns that the team’s championship window may be closing.

With pressure mounting to contend in 2026, Detroit is expected to be aggressive this offseason — and upgrading the edge rush remains a top priority.

The Lions currently face uncertainty at the position, as last year’s starter opposite Aidan Hutchinson, Al-Quadin Muhammad, is set to hit free agency. While Detroit could attempt to re-sign Muhammad, his price tag will rise significantly after a breakout season that saw him record a career-high 11 sacks.

Rather than settle for a short-term solution, Detroit has been predicted to make a major splash by targeting Trey Hendrickson in free agency. According to SportsGrid’s Paul Connor, the Lions are the frontrunners to land the star pass rusher.

“The Lions’ Super Bowl window is shrinking, and Detroit needs another edge presence opposite Aidan Hutchinson,” Connor said. “Hendrickson’s high motor fits Dan Campbell’s culture perfectly.”

Hendrickson is expected to move on from the Cincinnati Bengals after contract negotiations reportedly stalled in recent years. While Cincinnati could franchise tag and trade him, it remains unclear if they will pursue that route.

For Detroit, Hendrickson represents a true “all-in” move. Pairing him with Hutchinson would give the Lions one of the most dangerous edge-rushing duos in the NFL, instantly elevating the defense and strengthening the team’s Super Bowl hopes.

Spotrac projects Hendrickson will command a two-year, $50 million contract on the open market. Considering he led the NFL in sacks from 2023 through 2024, that deal could prove to be excellent value for a win-now contender like Detroit.

The biggest obstacle may be Lions general manager Brad Holmes, who has traditionally avoided large free-agent contracts while prioritizing extensions for homegrown stars. However, after a disappointing 2025 campaign, that approach could shift.

If Detroit chooses to abandon its conservative strategy and pursue an elite veteran pass rusher, Hendrickson would be the perfect target — and a move that could redefine the Lions’ 2026 season.
