Lions Dominate Commanders Behind Goff and Gibbs

Detroit’s offense was unstoppable Sunday as Jahmyr Gibbs scored three touchdowns and quarterback Jared Goff threw for 320 yards and three touchdowns, leading the Lions to a 44-22 victory over the Washington Commanders.

Gibbs rushed for 142 yards and two scores while also catching a touchdown pass, helping the Lions (6-3) find the end zone on their first eight drives. Goff completed 25 of 33 attempts for his second 300-yard game of the season, and Jameson Williams hauled in six catches for 119 yards and a touchdown.

Detroit gained 546 total yards and 30 first downs, avenging last January’s playoff loss to Washington, who are now 3-7 after losing their fifth straight game. Over the last four games, the Commanders have been outscored 154-65.

Filling in for injured Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota completed 16 of 22 passes for 213 yards and two touchdowns for Washington.

The Lions struck early, scoring touchdowns on their first three drives before settling for a field goal to lead 25-10 at halftime. After Washington’s opening drive ended in a punt, Detroit went 75 yards in 10 plays, with Goff connecting with Gibbs on a 14-yard touchdown. Following a 48-yard kickoff return by Noah Igbinoghene and a Commanders field goal, the Lions pushed ahead 14-3 as Amon-Ra St. Brown caught a 9-yard touchdown pass late in the first quarter.

Gibbs then powered Detroit’s next drive, gaining 53 yards on five touches, including a 13-yard touchdown run. After Daron Payne was ejected for punching St. Brown, David Montgomery added a one-yard two-point conversion. Washington responded before halftime as Mariota found Chris Rodriguez for a one-yard touchdown, narrowing the gap to 22-10.

The scoring continued in the third quarter as Goff connected with Williams for a 14-yard score, and Mariota answered with a one-yard touchdown pass to Deebo Samuel, making it 32-16.

Early in the fourth, Gibbs broke free for a 43-yard touchdown run, and despite a missed extra point, Detroit extended its lead to 41-16. Mariota later threw a four-yard touchdown to Ben Sinnott, but the failed two-point attempt left the final score at 44-22 in favor of the Lions.
