Lions Drop Jahmyr Gibbs Bombshell as Detroit Enters Critical Offseason

The Detroit Lions may have ended the 2025 season just outside the playoff picture, but Jahmyr Gibbs gave the franchise plenty to celebrate heading into the offseason.

Despite Detroit’s 9–8 finish and postseason miss, the explosive running back capped off his year by tying a rare NFL scoring record, further cementing himself as one of the league’s most dangerous offensive weapons.

With major offseason changes underway — including a shakeup on the coaching staff — Gibbs is expected to remain a centerpiece of the Lions’ offense moving forward.

Jahmyr Gibbs Ties NFL Touchdown Record

On Thursday, the Lions announced that Jahmyr Gibbs tied an NFL record for the most games with a touchdown in a player’s first three seasons.

Gibbs now shares the mark with Hall of Famers Barry Sanders and Randy Moss, finishing with 31 games featuring at least one touchdown.

“31 games with a score for Jahmyr Gibbs,” the team posted on X.

The record-tying score came in Week 18, when Gibbs hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jared Goff during Detroit’s season-ending victory over the Chicago Bears.

Although the Lions had already been eliminated from playoff contention following a Week 17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings, the team closed the year on a high note with a strong divisional win.

Dan Campbell Praises Lions’ Fight After Elimination

Following the win over Chicago, Lions head coach Dan Campbell praised his team’s effort despite having nothing tangible to play for.

“To have guys lay it on the line when you say you’re not playing for anything, that speaks volumes,” Campbell said, via The Associated Press. “That takes a certain kind of pride and respect for the guy next to you.”

That competitive mindset has become a trademark of Campbell’s tenure in Detroit — and Gibbs has been central to that identity.

Lions Make Major Coaching Change After Offensive Regression

Shortly after the season finale, the Lions announced they had parted ways with offensive coordinator John Morton following just one season.

Campbell acknowledged the need for internal evaluation during his end-of-season press conference, even giving himself a harsh self-assessment.

“We’ve got nobody to blame but ourselves,” Campbell said via NFL.com. “I really don’t believe we’re that far off.”

Campbell had already taken over play-calling duties midseason, but Detroit’s offense failed to regain its elite form from the previous year.

According to NFL.com, the Lions experienced noticeable regression from 2024 to 2025, including:

Points per game: 1st → 2nd

Points per drive: 1st → 7th

Third-down efficiency: 4th → 20th

Total yards per game: 2nd → 5th

Gibbs Remains Key as Lions Search for New OC

Despite the offensive struggles, the Lions’ offensive coordinator position is expected to draw strong interest.

Detroit still boasts a talented core featuring Jahmyr Gibbs, Jared Goff, and All-Pro wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, giving any incoming coordinator a strong foundation to work with.

As the Lions look to rebound in 2026, Gibbs’ historic production and continued development remain one of the franchise’s biggest reasons for optimism.
