Lions elevate massive OL, experienced CB from practice squad for Bengals game

The Detroit Lions brought up some serious size from the practice squad ahead of their Week 5 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.

They promoted offensive lineman Devin Cochran and cornerback Tre Flowers. Cochran stands at 6-foot-7 and weighs 330 pounds. Flowers adds more height to the group, listed at 6-foot-3 and 203 pounds.

Cochran has been part of the team’s practice squad for nearly a month. This is the first time the Lions have called up the towering tackle. He spent his first three seasons, including all of the latest camp and preseason, with the Bengals. He appeared in nine games and made one start last season, his only regular-season experience so far.

It’s another weekend with left tackle Taylor Decker entering play listed as questionable. However, Decker has managed to play through a shoulder issue despite practicing just once since Week 1. The team still expects the veteran lineman to be ready for action.

Flowers also brings plenty of size for his position. He joined the practice squad earlier this week, making this a quick promotion for the cornerback. The 30-year-old has stood out physically during practice, towering over the rest of Detroit’s secondary.

The 2018 fifth-round pick has suited up for the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Jacksonville Jaguars, Indianapolis Colts, and Bengals during his seven-year NFL run. Flowers hasn’t held a full-time starting role since his early years in Seattle back in 2018 and 2019.

Flowers adds needed depth to the secondary and should contribute on special teams. The Lions are without D.J. Reed (hamstring) for four games after he was placed on injured reserve. They’ll also miss cornerback Khalil Dorsey (wrist/concussion) for Week 5 against the Bengals.

The veteran corner has appeared in 95 games with 44 starts across seven seasons. However, he’s recorded just one interception since 2018 and has primarily played special teams in recent years.

With Reed and Dorsey sidelined, Terrion Arnold steps into the top corner role, while Amik Robertson is expected to spend more time outside. If Robertson lines up outside, Avonte Maddox could handle more slot reps, with Rock Ya-Sin rotating in for specific defensive looks.

Additionally, there were no fines issued to either team following last week’s Lions-Browns matchup.
