Lions Face Tough Terrion Arnold Decision After the Bye

The Detroit Lions head into their bye week with plenty to feel good about. Sitting at 5-2, they can take a well-earned break while hoping the Pittsburgh Steelers help them regain control of the NFC North with a win over the Green Bay Packers on Sunday night.

While much has gone right for Detroit, not every aspect of the team has met expectations. Jameson Williams’s lack of production has been disappointing, and rookie Tyleik Williams has yet to make an impact on the interior defensive line. However, Terrion Arnold’s struggles stand out in a different way.

Unlike Jameson and Tyleik, whose futures are secure—the former with a new contract and the latter still developing—Arnold’s situation is more uncertain. The second-year corner has endured a difficult season, and his inconsistent play could push the Lions toward a tough decision as the trade deadline approaches after the bye.

Lions Might Have to Add a CB If Terrion Arnold’s Issues Persist

Drafted in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft, Arnold entered this season with lofty expectations. The signing of DJ Reed was meant to give him a seasoned mentor, and with defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard implementing a scheme similar to Aaron Glenn’s, all signs pointed toward a sophomore breakout.

But things haven’t gone as planned. According to Pro Football Focus, Arnold has given up 18 receptions for 283 yards and a touchdown, with three pass breakups on 29 targets. He has yet to record his first career interception, and his overall grade of 49.3 ranks 104th out of 118 qualifying cornerbacks.

Injuries have likely contributed, as Arnold admitted he hasn’t been fully healthy. Still, Sheppard has made it clear that’s no excuse for his poor performance. If the trend continues post-bye, Detroit could explore adding another cornerback to solidify the secondary.

Potential trade targets include Roger McCreary from the Tennessee Titans or Alontae Taylor from the New Orleans Saints. However, any such move would likely demote Arnold to a backup role and raise questions about his long-term fit in Detroit.

That’s the dilemma facing the Lions right now. They can stay patient and hope Arnold improves with time and health, or they can act decisively to strengthen their defense. Either choice carries risks, as Arnold’s growth remains vital to the team’s defensive future.

It’s not an ideal situation for a recent first-round pick, but Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell must weigh all options as they continue their pursuit of a Super Bowl run.
