Lions Fan Says Family Received Threats After DK Metcalf Sideline Altercation

A Detroit Lions supporter involved in a heated sideline exchange with NFL wide receiver DK Metcalf says the fallout from the incident has extended far beyond the stadium, claiming his family has since been subjected to threats.

The confrontation occurred when the Pittsburgh Steelers visited Detroit to face the Lions. Television cameras captured Metcalf on the sideline engaging with a fan who was leaning over the railing.

Social media users later circulated clips that appeared to show Metcalf striking toward the fan during the verbal exchange.
The fan, identified as Ryan Kennedy, has now spoken publicly about the incident and its impact on his personal life.

His comments come in response to Metcalf’s assertion that Kennedy used offensive and racially charged language toward him.
During a media appearance, Kennedy—wearing a backwards Lions hat—described himself as someone who rarely becomes angry but said certain issues provoke a strong emotional reaction.

He emphasized that racism is one of those triggers and firmly denied using any slurs or hateful language at the game. Kennedy stated that in his 15 years as a Lions season ticket holder, he has never engaged in that type of behavior.
Kennedy also addressed Metcalf directly, referring to him by his given name, DeKaylin.

He asked the player to publicly clarify the situation, saying that his family has been receiving threatening messages and that the situation has gone too far. Kennedy added that he harbors no ill will toward Metcalf and expressed forgiveness, closing his remarks with support for his team.

According to ESPN reporter Brooke Pryor, the press conference—held alongside Kennedy’s legal team—was intended to respond to the alleged assault, counter what they say are false narratives circulating publicly, and explain the serious personal consequences Kennedy has experienced since the incident.
Metcalf has also given his version of events, maintaining that Kennedy directed a racial insult at him, which prompted his reaction.

A source close to Metcalf further claimed that Kennedy insulted Metcalf’s mother and alleged that this was not the first issue between the two, noting that Metcalf had previously alerted stadium security about Kennedy during his time with the Seattle Seahawks.

Kennedy’s attorneys, Shawn Head and Sean Murphy of Head Murphy Law Firm, released a statement rejecting those accusations.

The statement asserts that Kennedy did not use racial slurs, misogynistic language, or any form of hate speech, calling the claims entirely untrue. The lawyers also stated that Kennedy has been subjected to harassment, threats, and messages encouraging violence since the allegations became public.

The repercussions extended beyond Kennedy as well. Following a review of the incident, Metcalf was suspended for the final two games of the season, a penalty that reportedly cost him significant guaranteed money and salary.
