Lions Finally Acknowledge Jameson Williams Mistake in Week 9

The Detroit Lions are returning from their bye week and will face the Minnesota Vikings in a key NFC North matchup at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Despite their strong 5-2 record this season, the Lions haven’t seen much output from wide receiver Jameson Williams. The situation has been frustrating for both the player and the coaching staff, and offensive coordinator John Morton took responsibility for the struggles.

Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Morton admitted via Kory Woods of MLive.com, “I failed him.” He added that he’s making a stronger effort to get Williams more involved in the offense, something he focused on extensively during the bye week.

John Morton Says He Plans to Get Jameson Williams More Opportunities After the Bye

Before the 2025 season began, Williams and the Lions agreed to a three-year deal worth up to $83 million, with $66 million guaranteed. However, the Alabama standout has endured a slow start this year, recording just 17 receptions for 289 yards and two touchdowns so far.

In two of his last three outings, Williams has posted 10 or fewer receiving yards. He’s surpassed the 60-yard mark only twice this season, far below what Detroit expects from one of its fastest and most talented offensive weapons.

Granted, Morton is still adapting as the new offensive play caller, but he acknowledged he must do a better job of utilizing Williams within the scheme. The 24-year-old receiver has remained a positive presence in the locker room and hasn’t voiced any frustration about his role, something the coaching staff deeply appreciates.

Detroit’s offense is far more explosive when Williams is making plays. He’s coming off a breakout season in which he tallied 1,001 receiving yards (17.3 per catch) and seven touchdowns, establishing himself as a big-play threat.

So far this year, Williams ranks third on the team in total targets (30), trailing only Amon-Ra St. Brown and Sam LaPorta. Running back Jahmyr Gibbs is right behind him with 28 targets.

Although the start to the 2025 season has been underwhelming, fans should expect Williams’ numbers to rise as Morton fine-tunes the balance in Detroit’s offensive attack. With so many talented options to feed, finding that rhythm has been tricky, but the coordinator remains confident.

It’s not an easy task, but Morton is determined to get it right. And judging by recent practices, Williams appears ready and excited for what’s coming next.
