Lions HC Dan Campbell delivers firm message on Brian Branch’s ‘unacceptable’ behavior

Dan Campbell called out Brian Branch for his actions following the Lions’ defeat to the Chiefs on Sunday night.

Campbell openly criticized Brian Branch for his confrontation with JuJu Smith-Schuster after the Detroit Lions’ 30-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.

During postgame handshakes, Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes extended his hand to Branch, but the Lions safety declined. Moments later, Smith-Schuster approached to offer his own handshake, only for Branch to strike the veteran receiver, knocking him to the ground. Smith-Schuster immediately retaliated, forcing teammates and officials to intervene before it escalated into a full brawl.

Campbell later addressed the incident in his postgame remarks, per Woodward Sports Network, and he didn’t mince words regarding Branch’s conduct, deeming it completely unacceptable.

“I love Brian Branch, but what he did was unacceptable, and it won’t be tolerated here. That’s not who we are or what we represent. I apologized to Coach Reid, the Chiefs, and to Schuster. That behavior isn’t okay. That’s not how we operate, and it won’t be excused. He understands that, and so does the entire team,” Campbell stated.

How Dan Campbell, Lions performed against Chiefs

It’s evident that Dan Campbell has no tolerance for Brian Branch’s behavior after the game, and it seems only a matter of time before the organization decides on his disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, Detroit failed to keep pace with Kansas City throughout the matchup. Though competitive in the first half, the Lions couldn’t maintain their rhythm, as the Chiefs outscored them 17-7 over the final two quarters of regulation.

Quarterback Jared Goff was efficient but needed more support from his teammates to challenge the Chiefs. He completed 23 of 29 passes for 203 yards and two touchdowns.

Running back Jahmyr Gibbs couldn’t find the end zone, finishing with 17 carries for 65 yards. David Montgomery contributed four rushes for 24 yards and added two receptions for 37 yards.

Three Lions stood out in the passing attack. Jameson Williams led with six receptions for 66 yards and a touchdown. Sam LaPorta followed with five catches for 45 yards and a score, while Amon-Ra St. Brown tallied nine receptions for 45 yards.

The Lions now aim to rebound at home in their upcoming game. They will host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Oct. 20 at 7 p.m. ET.
