Following the Detroit Lions’ loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, much of the postgame focus landed on the offense’s issues. However, the defense actually held up reasonably well—and head coach Dan Campbell believes reinforcements could be on the way. According to beat reporter Colton Pouncy, Campbell is optimistic that one of Detroit’s top cornerbacks might return for the team’s Week 12 matchup against the New York Giants.
“Dan Campbell says he’s hopeful to get CB D.J. Reed back this week. Reed’s status will be determined tomorrow and Friday, after seeing him in practice,” Pouncy posted on X.
Reed has been out since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 4 against the Cleveland Browns, sidelining him for six straight games. It’s been a frustrating setback for the veteran corner, who joined the Lions on a three-year deal and was expected to play a major role in their secondary. Before going down, Reed recorded 14 solo tackles, an interception, and a fumble recovery. After three seasons with the New York Jets, he was poised to become a centerpiece of Detroit’s defensive unit.
His potential return could significantly bolster a Lions defense that, surprisingly, ranks eighth in the league against the pass. Adding Reed back into the mix would be especially valuable as Detroit tries to claw its way back into playoff contention.
The Lions’ upcoming schedule only heightens the importance of having their secondary at full strength. Reed would likely be tasked with covering Christian Watson when they face the Green Bay Packers, followed by matchups with the Dallas Cowboys and their explosive duo of CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens. Detroit also has looming battles against Puka Nacua and the Rams, DK Metcalf and the Steelers, and a rematch with Justin Jefferson and the Vikings.
If Reed is cleared to play, he is expected to immediately step back into his starting role, giving Detroit a much-needed defensive boost as they push for a late-season surge and another trip to the postseason.
