The Detroit Lions could retain several important contributors on defense as the team prepares for the 2026 NFL season.
According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, the Lions are expected to re-sign six defensive players currently set to hit free agency, keeping much of their defensive depth intact.
Rather than handing out expensive long-term deals to aging veterans, Detroit may focus on affordable and versatile defenders who already understand the team’s defensive system.
That approach would allow the Lions to maintain continuity on defense while preserving salary cap flexibility heading into the 2026 season.
Roy Lopez Could Return on a Multi-Year Deal
Defensive tackle Roy Lopez quietly played an important role for Detroit during the 2025 season.
Although Lopez appeared in just 39% of the Lions’ defensive snaps, he proved to be one of the team’s most dependable run defenders throughout the year.
With the upcoming NFL free-agent market for defensive tackles expected to be relatively thin, Lopez could draw interest from multiple teams.
However, Birkett believes Detroit may ultimately keep the veteran defender.
Prediction:
The Lions re-sign Lopez to a two-year contract.
Rock Ya-Sin Provides Valuable Secondary Depth
Veteran defensive back Rock Ya-Sin was another key contributor in Detroit’s secondary during the 2025 campaign.
Ya-Sin brings positional flexibility, with the ability to play both cornerback and safety, while also helping against the run.
Although he will turn 30 years old before the 2026 season, Detroit could likely bring him back without committing a significant financial investment.
Prediction:
Ya-Sin returns to the Lions on a low-cost one-year contract.
Malcolm Rodriguez Could Land a Prove-It Contract
Linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez had a limited role during the 2025 season while recovering from a torn ACL, appearing in only seven games.
Despite the injury setback, Rodriguez has been a reliable rotational linebacker and a strong special teams contributor throughout his tenure with Detroit.
Because the free-agent market for depth linebackers typically remains modest, Birkett believes the Lions could keep Rodriguez in Detroit for another season.
Prediction:
Rodriguez signs a one-year prove-it deal with the Lions.
