Lions Predicted to Land Saints’ $44 Million Veteran in Blockbuster Deal

The Detroit Lions could explore a bold offseason move by targeting New Orleans Saints offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz in a potential trade. As the Saints enter a transitional phase, veteran players like Ruiz may become available as the franchise reshapes its roster.

The Saints appear to be moving in a new direction after quarterback Tyler Shough emerged as a possible long-term solution under center. While the team has talent, New Orleans is not yet positioned as a true Super Bowl contender. That reality could push the organization toward stockpiling NFL Draft capital, possibly by trading experienced veterans.

Bleacher Report’s Alex Ballentine recently proposed that the Saints could consider moving Ruiz to Detroit as part of a roster reset.

“The Saints are in a transition period with their own cap hole to dig out of,” Ballentine wrote. “That could mean that a veteran like Cesar Ruiz is available. Dan Campbell was with the Saints when Ruiz was drafted out of Michigan. Ruiz has played guard with the Saints, but he was a center in college. He could either slide over or give them the runway to get either Tate Ratledge, Miles Frazier or a rookie prepared to move into the role.”

Ruiz, who signed a $44 million contract, brings positional versatility and proven performance. He has excelled at guard in the NFL while possessing the ability to play center, giving any acquiring team flexibility along the interior offensive line.

For Detroit, upgrading the offensive line is expected to be a major priority this offseason. Despite boasting one of the league’s most explosive offenses, the Lions experienced unexpected struggles up front last season. Improving pass protection and run blocking could be critical for maximizing their offensive weapons.

A trade for Ruiz would allow Detroit to add an established veteran without relying solely on the draft to fix its offensive line issues. The Saints likely would not command a massive return, but a mid-round draft pick could be enough to complete a deal.

If the Saints decide to retool and the Lions pursue immediate improvement, a Cesar Ruiz trade to Detroit could make sense for both franchises as the 2026 NFL offseason unfolds.
