Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff guided his team to a massive win over the Kansas City Chiefs in 2023, a victory that helped propel Detroit into the conversation as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.
Now, Goff will put his unbeaten streak against the Chiefs on the line when he returns to Arrowhead Stadium this Sunday. The veteran signal-caller is 2-0 versus Kansas City in his career, a record that includes one of the greatest regular-season games ever played.
Jared Goff’s Incredible Numbers vs. Chiefs
The Lions have another opportunity to make a statement on Sunday as they travel to Kansas City to meet the 2-3 Chiefs. A win would lift Detroit to 5-1, keeping them on course for a third straight NFC North crown while pushing the Chiefs further away from another Super Bowl run.
Goff has dominated in his matchups with Kansas City, winning both contests and posting statistics that seem almost unreal.
In 2018, Goff led the Los Angeles Rams to a 54-51 victory over the Chiefs, completing 31 of 49 passes for 413 yards, four touchdowns, and no interceptions. While his numbers were more modest in Detroit’s 2023 triumph, Goff still finished 22 of 35 for 253 yards and one score.
This season, Goff has been remarkably efficient, leading the league with a 75.2% completion rate while throwing for 1,187 yards, 12 touchdowns, and two interceptions. He has helped the Lions rebound from a season-opening defeat to Green Bay by rattling off four straight wins.
Jared Goff Looks to Make Another Statement
When speaking to reporters this week, Goff reflected on how the Lions’ 2023 victory over Kansas City marked a major turning point in the franchise’s growth. The team had begun the previous season 1-6 but rallied with eight wins in its final 10 contests, narrowly missing the postseason.
Detroit opened the 2023 campaign on the road against the defending champion Chiefs in the NFL’s Thursday night opener, earning a 21-20 victory. Goff said it represented a defining moment for the team.
“I thought that was huge,” Goff said, via The Athletic. “Especially since they were coming off a Super Bowl win and we were coming off missing the playoffs after going 9-8. So yeah, that was big. … To go there, get that W, and feel like we beat one of the league’s best. Now we hope teams feel that way about us — and we still have to prove it every week.”
Though the Chiefs have stumbled early this season, Goff understands they remain a formidable opponent. The Lions quarterback said Kansas City has set the standard for sustained success in the NFL.
“The number one thing is consistency,” Goff said. “I don’t know how many straight AFC Championships they’ve made — it’s amazing. And it’s tough to reload year after year after such deep playoff runs. That’s what you respect most — their ability for nearly a decade now to reload every offseason and come back just as strong.”
