Lions Receive Positive Update on Key Defensive Lineman Before Chiefs Matchup

The Detroit Lions could soon have a major piece of their defense back on the field, months after he went down with a severe knee injury.

Defensive lineman Alim McNeill is getting closer to making his return from the torn ACL that ended his 2024 season, potentially addressing what one analyst believes is an emerging weakness for the 4-1 Lions.

Alim McNeill Could Solve Detroit’s Biggest Defensive Issue

According to Bleacher Report’s Brad Gagnon, the wave of early injuries has been the “main concern” for Detroit so far this year, with McNeill’s absence being one of the most significant.

“The Lions are still missing key defenders Alim McNeill (knee), Terrion Arnold (shoulder), and D.J. Reed (hamstring). Safety Kerby Joseph has been playing through a knee issue, and Brian Branch is managing an ankle problem,” Gagnon wrote. “Naturally, the defense has had some inconsistent outings so far. They’re allowing 22.4 points per game, up from 20.1 in 2024.”

Gagnon pointed out that the Lions have compensated well despite the injuries, but could receive a massive lift once McNeill is back — which might happen as soon as this week.

“The bright side is they’re offsetting those injuries with turnovers and sacks, and McNeill could return just in time for the crucial Week 6 meeting with the Chiefs,” Gagnon added.

Encouraging Progress for Alim McNeill

It seemed possible that McNeill might suit up for last week’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals, with head coach Dan Campbell calling him “50/50” to play. Though the Lions held him out, the coaching staff continues to sound optimistic about his comeback and readiness to return to form.

Defensive coordinator Kelvin Sheppard praised McNeill’s progress as he builds toward his return.

“I told Dan [Campbell] yesterday it’s amazing watching his practice film. It’s like he’s been in camp the whole time. He doesn’t look like a guy who’s missed any time, and that’s a credit to him,” Sheppard told ESPN. “I don’t know all the technical terms — bone density and all that — but what I do know is I’m seeing a very high-level defensive tackle on tape, and I’m thrilled to get him back.”

McNeill said he’s eager to rejoin his teammates and contribute again. The Lions have struggled at times to create consistent pressure on opposing quarterbacks — especially since Aidan Hutchinson’s season-ending injury last year. McNeill has been one of Detroit’s most reliable and disruptive interior defenders.

McNeill tore his ACL in December, forcing him to miss the final stretch and Detroit’s brief playoff run. He wrapped up the season with 25 tackles, 3.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and a pass deflection.

“I’m just taking it day by day, practice by practice, trying to put good tape out there to show I’m ready,” McNeill said. “I don’t have a set return date yet, but I can’t wait until it comes.”
