If the Detroit Lions want to bolster their pass rush before the trade cutoff, there are still names worth watching.

Bradley Chubb could sit near the very top of that board. Entering Week 3, Detroit has only four sacks in two games. By contrast, the Green Bay Packers already have nine, while the Minnesota Vikings have totaled five.

The 2018 No. 5 overall draft choice, Chubb owns 42.5 sacks and 15 forced fumbles in his career. He played like an All-Pro in 2023 with the Miami Dolphins—11.0 sacks and a league-high six forced fumbles—before a torn ACL ended his year in December and sidelined him all of 2024.

Now that he’s back and performing well — with 3.0 sacks, 3 TFLs and 3 QB hits through three games — he’s absolutely the kind of player the Lions should pursue, especially considering Miami’s current struggles.

Chubb Is a Complete Game-Wrecker When Healthy

Of course, any move would have to weigh his injury history. He tore his ACL with the Denver Broncos in 2019, underwent multiple ankle surgeries in 2021, then suffered his most recent 2023 knee issue in Miami.

That’s significant mileage, but he’s still only 29, and he’s proving he can win consistently. Over seven years, PFF credits him with 159 total hurries and 53 quarterback hits.

The financial side isn’t prohibitive either. Miami signed Chubb to a five-year, $110 million extension in late 2022, which runs through 2027. Because of restructures, his 2025 cap hit is only $12.3 million — very reasonable for a starting-caliber edge rusher. For Detroit, that’s a manageable figure while deciding to extend or restructure.

Miami’s 0–3 start plays a role too. If the losses pile up, a roster sell-off could follow. With Jaelan Phillips and rookie Chop Robinson already in place on the edge, Miami could reset their books and prioritize draft picks.

This kind of deal would fit both sides’ situations. Detroit lands a high-level running mate for Aidan Hutchinson without sacrificing a premium Day 2 pick, while Miami collects depth and flexible draft assets.

Lopez would give Miami an affordable rotational tackle — valuable after losing Christian Wilkins — along with future selections that increase if Chubb performs.

Hutchinson is a star, but he can’t carry the front alone. Pairing Chubb opposite him would instantly raise the unit’s ceiling.

Chubb isn’t risk-free, but his upside might solve Detroit’s biggest defensive flaw. If Brad Holmes wants Hutchinson to have a true co-star, this could be the right path.
