MASSIVE TRADE: Lions Eye $76 Million Vikings Star Jonathan Greenard in Blockbuster Trade Push
The Detroit Lions have taken a cautious approach during the opening week of NFL free agency, but a potential blockbuster trade could still position them for a legitimate Super Bowl run in the 2026 season.
One of Detroit’s biggest remaining needs is finding a high-impact pass-rusher to line up opposite star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. While several free-agent options remain on the market, the most talented edge defender who could realistically change teams is Jonathan Greenard of the Minnesota Vikings.
According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, Minnesota has been actively exploring trade options for Greenard, who is reportedly seeking a new contract. The veteran pass-rusher is entering the third year of a four-year, $76 million deal and has pushed for either a restructure or an extension with additional guarantees.
Rather than meet those demands, the Vikings have begun fielding offers, with a Day 2 draft pick believed to be the desired return. The Lions currently hold the No. 50 overall selection in the 2026 NFL Draft, which could be the centerpiece of a deal. A potential trade framework might see Detroit send its second-round pick to Minnesota in exchange for Greenard and a fifth-round pick (No. 163), creating value for both franchises.
Lions Seeking Pass-Rush Upgrade After Muhammad Departure
Detroit’s interest in adding an edge defender intensified after veteran Al‑Quadin Muhammad signed a one-year, $6 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers following a career-best 11-sack season.
While some analysts have urged the Lions to pursue elite stars such as Maxx Crosby or Myles Garrett, those blockbuster moves would likely require multiple first-round picks. Detroit has not been publicly linked to such aggressive offers, and both players appear unlikely to be moved.
In contrast, Greenard represents a more balanced solution — offering high-level production without the massive trade cost associated with top-tier superstars. Despite missing the final five games last season with a shoulder injury, he remains a proven disruptor when healthy.
Trade Competition Could Intensify
The Lions are not alone in their pursuit. Both the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys have reportedly held discussions with Minnesota about a potential trade.
Greenard recorded 22 quarterback hits, 18 tackles for loss, and 12 sacks in his first season with the Vikings in 2024. He followed that with 47 pressures, 10 tackles for loss, and three sacks across 12 games last year. Turning 29 in May, he was ranked the 18th-best edge defender by Pro Football Focus among 115 qualifying players.
If Detroit hopes to maximize its championship window, securing a reliable pass-rush partner for Hutchinson could be one of the franchise’s most important moves this offseason.
