Newcastle United are plotting a possible January swoop for Ruben Neves, and the midfielder is eager to return to the Premier League, according to TBR Football.
The Magpies have endured a disappointing beginning to the campaign despite a busy summer window, securing only one victory from their opening five Premier League fixtures while also losing their opening Champions League clash against Barcelona.
Eddie Howe is eager to reinforce his squad for the second half of the season following the record sale of Alexander Isak on deadline day, which provided funds to spend, and Neves has surfaced as a serious option.
Neves, who pockets £410,000 per week at Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, departed England for the Middle East in 2023 and is now into the final 12 months of his current deal with the club.
Al Hilal want to secure him to fresh terms, but the ex-Wolves captain feels he has “unfinished business” in the Premier League and wishes to return to England, according to Bailey’s report.
“I am told that Neves thinks there is ‘unfinished’ business in England – he thoroughly enjoyed his Wolves stint and is still widely admired.
“But it is not certain that he comes back to England.
“A return to Portugal could also be explored, while there is notable interest from Spain and Italy too – he will not be short of opportunities.
“It is understood that Neves, having earned significantly during his spell in Saudi Arabia, will not demand the same wages – he is in a strong place to simply choose the best club for him – this transfer will not revolve around money.”
Newcastle held conversations about a possible move for the Portugal international during the summer but ultimately nothing materialized, leaving the 28-year-old in Saudi. However, the Magpies have since requested updates on his situation heading into the January window.
Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are also monitoring Neves and could pursue him this winter, although Newcastle may hold an edge in the chase for his services because of their ownership.
The Magpies are backed by the Saudi PIF, who also control Al Hilal, meaning an agreement could be more straightforward should Neves accept a move to St James’ Park. Al Hilal are unlikely to want him leaving on a free in the summer after investing £47m to sign him, which increases the likelihood of a January transfer if a new deal isn’t finalized soon.
