Asked for clarity on Schar’s situation after the match, Eddie Howe responded: “I don’t really have any detail. At that point I was relying entirely on the medical team [when he stayed on the pitch].
“The only message passed to me was that he was fine to carry on. Beyond that, I don’t know his current state or how he feels now.”
Schar has since gone public on social media confirming he’ll be absent for Sunday’s Premier League meeting with AFC Bournemouth, the Carabao Cup tie against Bradford City in midweek and the Arsenal clash next weekend.
The 33-year-old’s potential comeback fixture could be the Champions League trip to Belgium to face Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday, October 1.
Posting on Instagram, Schar said: “Gutted not to take more from the match but many more points to earn this season!🖤🤍
“Sadly, I’ll be missing a couple of games but aiming to return soon🙏@worflags, unreal as always 🏁
This marks the second head issue Schar has sustained this season, having also been withdrawn against Liverpool in August.
Following that fixture, Howe revealed Schar had suffered “concussion” though he cleared protocols quickly and started against Leeds United the following week.
His absence is likely to open the door for Thiaw to make his first full start, having only featured from the bench twice since arriving from AC Milan for £35m in August.
Speaking about Thiaw on the latest Geordie Journos after the Barcelona defeat, I said: “I was hugely impressed by Malick Thiaw. Hugely impressed. He pulled off a couple of Cruyff turns, looked assured on the ball.
“He just slotted into this level seamlessly. Great stature as well. He struck me as a very composed, calm and elegant defender.”
Four Newcastle United absentees for Bournemouth trip – one in doubt
The Magpies are also without new additions Yoane Wissa and Jacob Ramsey until after the upcoming international break, while Anthony Gordon completes the final game of his suspension.
Meanwhile, Trippier’s situation remains unclear with Howe unable to deliver an update on the full-back following the Barcelona fixture.
Howe continued: “It’s the same for Kieran. I haven’t yet had the chance to check with anyone.”
