NFL Issues Final Ruling on Patrick Mahomes Incident

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs returned to the win column in Week 6 of the 2025 NFL season, improving to 3-3 after a 30-17 “Sunday Night Football” victory over Brian Branch and the Detroit Lions. Mahomes completed 22 of 30 passes for 257 yards and three touchdowns, adding 32 rushing yards and another score on the ground in a dominant showing.

After the game ended, Chiefs receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster approached Branch for a postgame handshake, but the Lions safety reacted by taking a swing at him. Running back Isiah Pacheco quickly intervened to restrain Branch, while Smith-Schuster’s frustration escalated tensions, sparking a brief on-field scuffle. Mahomes even stepped in to separate the two sides and help defuse the confrontation.

For his part in the altercation, Branch appealed but will still serve a one-game suspension when the Lions face the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on “Monday Night Football” in Week 7. Meanwhile, neither Smith-Schuster nor Mahomes faced any disciplinary action or fines from the league office, avoiding penalties altogether.

Under standard NFL rules, players can be fined as much as $40,686 for a first-time fighting offense, with a second violation costing up to $81,374. While no fines were assessed for the postgame clash, two other Lions defenders were hit with penalties: linebacker Alex Anzalone was fined $12,172 for “striking/kicking/tripping/kneeing,” while defensive tackle Tyler Lacy received a $5,722 fine for a similar infraction.

Mahomes has yet to incur any fines during the 2025 campaign, though star tight end Travis Kelce was docked $14,491 in Week 2 for “obscene gestures” during a matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles. Other Chiefs fined this year include JuJu Smith-Schuster, Kareem Hunt, and Hollywood Brown, bringing the team’s total to four players disciplined.

Next up, Mahomes and the Chiefs will look to carry their momentum into an AFC West showdown against Geno Smith and the Las Vegas Raiders, set for Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
