NFL Reveals Disciplinary Ruling After Baker Mayfield Controversy

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield wasn’t too happy during the team’s defeat to the Detroit Lions in Week 7 and made sure referee John Hussey knew it late in the 24-9 loss.

Mayfield confessed he was frustrated with several calls, including one where he believed the Lions should have been penalized for holding and another when a replay review that initially awarded Tampa Bay a first down was overturned and ruled short.

“A third down defensive holding that wasn’t called, and honestly, I’m still really confused about the double review,” Mayfield said after the game. “There were a lot of things that felt questionable out there.”

“A lot of emotions at the end. Maybe some of that frustration came out toward John Hussey, but I work my tail off and invest everything in this game, so when I feel things aren’t handled fairly, I’m going to speak up.”

Another sore spot for Mayfield came when he was clearly tripped by Lions defensive lineman Tyrus Wheat. Mayfield, who’s been among the early MVP candidates through seven weeks, was seen shouting at Hussey after the missed call, which could have provided the Buccaneers a crucial first down.

While multiple players have been fined in the past for criticizing officials, despite his on-field exchange and postgame comments, Mayfield was not fined by the NFL for his actions.

Wheat, however, received a $5,722 fine for striking, kicking, tripping, or kneeing.
