Penei Sewell Get Brutal Honest Following Lions’ Ugly Defeat to Vikings

The Detroit Lions’ playoff hopes officially ended after a disastrous 23–10 loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Day at U.S. Bank Stadium.

Despite being eliminated from postseason contention, the Vikings played with pride and intensity, overwhelming Detroit on both sides of the ball. Minnesota’s defense dominated from start to finish, forcing turnovers and keeping the Lions’ offense completely out of rhythm.

Turnovers Doom Detroit Against Minnesota

Detroit entered the Week 17 matchup needing a win to stay alive in the 2025 NFL playoff race, but the game quickly spiraled out of control.

The Lions committed six total turnovers

Jared Goff threw two interceptions

Minnesota recovered four fumbles

Goff was sacked five times

Detroit averaged just 3.6 yards per play

The performance marked Minnesota’s fourth straight win, while Detroit was officially eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.

Penei Sewell Breaks Down What Went Wrong

After the game, Lions All-Pro tackle Penei Sewell addressed the media and pointed directly to the turnovers as the main reason for the loss.

“We had six turnovers today, and that’s probably the recipe to lose,” Sewell said.
“When the ball’s on the ground, or there’s a lot of turnovers, it’s just little things. We’re being a little loose with the ball.”

Sewell added that the Vikings’ defensive scheme created problems all game.

“We knew it was going to be a lot of fronts and different looks. It was our job to figure it out, and we didn’t do a good enough job.”

Jared Goff Credits Vikings’ Defensive Game Plan

Jared Goff also praised Minnesota’s defense, acknowledging their execution and adjustments throughout the game.

“They had a good plan and exploited some things on us,” Goff said.
“They added extra rushers, got free runners, and disrupted us.”

Goff noted that while Detroit converted some key third downs, Minnesota adjusted effectively in the second half.

“They adjusted, and we didn’t do a good enough job adjusting back.”

Vikings Played Spoiler Role With Motivation

While Minnesota was already out of playoff contention, Justin Jefferson admitted the Vikings were motivated by the chance to eliminate a division rival.

“We’re not in the dance, but eliminating one of our division opponents felt great,” Jefferson said.
“We were definitely trying to do that.”

Minnesota will look to carry its momentum into the final game of the 2025 NFL season against the Green Bay Packers, aiming for a fifth straight win to close the year strong.
