Detroit Lions

Peter Schrager’s mock draft has the Detroit Lions selecting the most “Dan Campbell-type” player in the entire class.

The Detroit Lions approached NFL free agency with a clear sense of urgency, and if that same mindset carries into the 2026 NFL Draft, the team could position itself for a strong postseason run next year. One recent mock draft suggests Detroit could add a prospect who perfectly reflects the tough, gritty identity the franchise values.

In a mock draft published this week, Peter Schrager of ESPN connected Detroit with Olaivavega Ioane, a powerful guard from Penn State Nittany Lions football. Schrager believes Ioane’s style and mentality align closely with the culture established by Lions head coach Dan Campbell.

Schrager explained that Ioane might be the prospect who best fits Campbell’s brand of football in the entire class. Standing about 6-foot-4 and weighing roughly 320 pounds, Ioane is known for playing with a physical edge. During his final season at Penn State, he earned All-American recognition and did not allow a single sack, making him an attractive interior offensive line option for Detroit.

Adding Ioane would strengthen the middle of the Lions’ offensive front. After selecting Tate Ratledge in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft, Detroit could potentially slot Ioane in at left guard, giving the team another young lineman capable of starting right away. His physicality as a run blocker would likely appeal to the Lions’ offensive philosophy.

However, the selection might spark some debate among fans. The concern wouldn’t be Ioane’s ability, but rather the other prospects who might still be available when Detroit is on the clock.

Left tackle remains a notable question mark for the Lions following the unexpected departure of Taylor Decker prior to free agency. In Schrager’s scenario, Detroit opts for Ioane instead of several tackle prospects, including Monroe Freeling from Georgia Bulldogs football, Blake Miller of Clemson Tigers football, and Kadyn Proctor from Alabama Crimson Tide football.

One possible explanation is that Detroit could shift star lineman Penei Sewell over to left tackle, which would reduce the urgency at that position and make an interior lineman like Ioane more appealing.

Regardless of the debate, bringing Ioane into the lineup would likely make the Lions’ offensive line stronger and more physical in the middle.
