Rams HC Sean McVay  Send Clear Message as Lions Make desperate Move for Playoff

The Los Angeles Rams enter Week 15 with a playoff-clinching opportunity against the Detroit Lions, but head coach Sean McVay is making sure his team remains locked in on the task at hand rather than the postseason implications.

A win over Detroit would officially send the Rams to the playoffs, yet players insist their attention is strictly on preparation and execution.

Davante Adams Downplays Playoff Scenarios

Veteran wide receiver Davante Adams, who joined the Rams in search of moments like this, said he was unaware that Sunday’s game could clinch a playoff berth.

“I didn’t even need to know that,” Adams said. “The mindset is to be where your feet are. Today is Wednesday. On Sunday, we’ll go out there and prepare the same way we always do.”

That message echoes McVay’s long-standing philosophy of focusing on daily improvement rather than outcomes.

Rams Positioned as NFC’s First Playoff Team

At 10-3, the Rams can become the first NFC team to clinch a playoff spot with a win over the 8-5 Lions, holding key tiebreakers in a highly competitive conference. Five NFC teams already have at least nine wins, underscoring the difficulty of the accomplishment.

McVay acknowledged the depth of the NFC but refused to look beyond Sunday.

“Our sole focus is on playing as well as we possibly can against a really good football team,” McVay said.

Lions Present Familiar Challenge for Rams

The matchup carries added significance as the Lions have beaten the Rams in two straight one-possession games, including the 2023 NFC Wild Card showdown.

Despite a turbulent season marked by injuries and staff changes, Detroit has found offensive rhythm since Dan Campbell took over play-calling duties in Week 10, averaging 31 points per game since then.

McVay praised Campbell’s approach, citing improved sequencing and better utilization of Detroit’s offensive weapons, including deep-threat receiver Jameson Williams.

Lions Defense Adjusting After Brian Branch Injury

Detroit’s defense has been tested by injuries, particularly in the secondary. The season-ending Achilles injury to safety Brian Branch is a major blow.

Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford highlighted Branch’s versatility, calling him a complete defender capable of impacting both the pass and run game.

Even with multiple defenders on injured reserve, the Lions’ pass rush remains dangerous, ranking eighth in the NFL in sack percentage (7.97%).

Rams Expect Physical Battle Up Front

Rams offensive coordinator Mike LaFleur emphasized the challenge of facing Aidan Hutchinson, calling the Lions’ edge rusher “an absolute freak.”

“Every time you turn on the tape, you know it’s going to be a physical, full-game battle,” LaFleur said.

Week 15 Clash Carries Playoff Stakes

While the Rams refuse to dwell on playoff scenarios, Sunday’s matchup at 1:25 p.m. PT carries major postseason implications. A win would officially punch their ticket to January football — but only if they take care of business against a tough, resilient Lions team.
