Report: Detroit Lions Set to Make RB Jahmyr Gibbs NFL’s Highest-Paid Running Back After 3-TDs Hat-Trick vs. Cowboys
The Detroit Lions are reportedly preparing to reward running back Jahmyr Gibbs with a massive contract extension, according to NFL insider Ian Rapoport. Gibbs has been a standout this season, showcasing his elite talent as one of the top offensive weapons in the league.
Gibbs, a former first-round draft pick, continues to impress in 2025, already posting 1,062 rushing yards, 474 receiving yards, and 16 total touchdowns through Week 14. He’s also on the verge of breaking NFL history, needing just one more touchdown to surpass Lions legend Barry Sanders for the most touchdowns scored before age 24.
Rapoport reports that Gibbs is Detroit’s top priority for a contract extension, which could come as early as 2026, even with two years remaining on his rookie deal, including the fifth-year option. “My understanding is Gibbs is priority No. 1. Could be highly-paid this offseason,” Rapoport noted.
The Lions have a proven track record of rewarding their homegrown talent, and securing Gibbs with a long-term deal sooner rather than later makes financial sense. Experts predict that Gibbs could reset the NFL running back market, with a potential deal worth over $21 million per year.
For context, current top running backs include Saquon Barkley, with a $20.6 million annual average, and Josh Jacobs, with a total contract value of $48 million. A potential four-year, $84 million extension for Gibbs would make him the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
With historic performances and game-changing ability, Jahmyr Gibbs is poised to solidify his place among the NFL’s elite and become a cornerstone of the Detroit Lions’ offense for years to come.
