The approach the Detroit Lions have taken in free agency this offseason has sparked plenty of discussion among analysts and fans alike.
Even with a roster that already includes All-Pro-caliber players on both sides of the ball, the team’s decisions in free agency have left many people puzzled.
Report: Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell may differ on roster vision
After missing the playoffs in 2025, Detroit chose to part ways with several veteran contributors, opting instead to bring in players on short-term, one-year deals.
Holmes faces a delicate balancing act—keeping the team competitive in the present while also preserving long-term stability and success.
Although the Lions have posted winning records over the past four seasons, their inability to make a deep playoff run in the last two years has raised concerns. Injuries have certainly played a role, but the team’s additions through both free agency and the draft haven’t been enough to push them to the next level.
It’s worth remembering that Detroit came within a half of reaching the Super Bowl in 2023. Since then, however, the team hasn’t quite maintained that upward trajectory. A surprising playoff defeat to the Washington Commanders intensified expectations that the front office would act more aggressively. Instead, their offseason strategy has focused more on filling gaps than securing game-changing talent.
During a segment on 97.1 The Ticket, host Mike Valenti addressed a caller’s concern about how Campbell might feel about the current roster direction—especially as the team gets younger. Valenti shared that, according to a source close to the team, this offseason marks the first time there have been clear differences in opinion between Campbell and Holmes regarding how the roster should be built.
Detroit remains one of the youngest teams in the league, which adds another layer to the discussion.
This reported divide raises an interesting question: is Campbell pushing for a younger, more competitive roster filled with hungry players, while Holmes might prefer pursuing more proven, high-impact talent? Holmes’ background with the Rams organization suggests he’s familiar with bold roster moves, which makes the current conservative approach even more intriguing.
Regardless of who is driving the philosophy, it appears the internal debate within the organization mirrors what fans and media have been questioning all offseason.
