Detroit Lions

Trump criticizes the New York Giants for what he called a “crazy” move in their loss to the Detroit Lions.

The New York Giants stunned fans with a puzzling late-game choice, opting to chase a touchdown instead of securing an almost certain field goal. Among those bewildered was former President Donald Trump.

With Brian Daboll recently dismissed, the Giants found themselves clinging to a 27–24 advantage in the fourth quarter against the Detroit Lions. As the clock wound below three minutes, New York marched inside the Detroit 10-yard line and faced a 4th-and-goal from the six.

Rather than take the routine three points—which would have extended their lead to six and forced Detroit to score a touchdown—the Giants gambled on a scoring play that could have given them a two-possession cushion. The risk backfired. Jameis Winston’s pass fell incomplete, Detroit quickly moved into field-goal range to tie the game, and the Lions eventually prevailed in overtime.

After watching the finish, Trump voiced his disbelief on Truth Social, questioning the judgment of interim head coach Mike Kafka.
He wrote, “Why didn’t the New York Football Giants kick the field goal? Who makes that call? It was CRAZY! I caught the end of the game and thought, when they went for the touchdown instead of the three, ‘That’s strange!’”

Despite the loss, Winston delivered one of his strongest outings of the season, completing 18 of 36 passes for 366 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception, providing a spark for a roster dealing with injuries to rookies Cam Skattebo and Jaxson Dart.

The Giants’ defense, however, had no answer for Detroit star Jahmyr Gibbs, who exploded for 219 rushing yards and two scores, while also adding 45 receiving yards and another touchdown.

The defeat dropped New York to 2–10, and they now turn their attention to a Monday Night Football matchup against the first-place New England Patriots.
