Two Lions Veterans Open Door to Retirement After Brutal Season

The Detroit Lions may be facing major changes along their offensive line following a disappointing end to the 2025 NFL season. Veteran tackles Taylor Decker and Dan Skipper both acknowledged after the season finale that retirement is a real possibility.

Both players battled significant injuries throughout the year, raising serious questions about their futures in Detroit and in the NFL.

Taylor Decker Opens Up About Injuries, Family Toll

Decker, the Lions’ longtime left tackle, revealed that his surgically repaired shoulder required multiple injections before games just to stay on the field. Speaking emotionally to reporters, Decker admitted the season took a heavy physical and personal toll—particularly on his family.

According to Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit, Decker emphasized that the sacrifices required to continue playing may no longer be worth it.

“It asked a lot of my wife. And it was selfish of me, but it was what was required to fulfill the expectations of my job,” Decker said.
“That’s not something I’m willing to do moving forward… I’m not willing to be a distant father.”

Decker added that he is currently unable to throw a football due to his shoulder and stressed that only the “right set of circumstances” would convince him to return for the 2026 season.

Dan Skipper Admits Retirement Is on the Table

Skipper was also visibly emotional while discussing his future. The veteran offensive tackle revealed he played through a lower back injury all season—an issue that nearly forced him to shut things down.

“This might be the last one,” Skipper said, per ESPN’s Kalyn Kahler.

An undrafted free agent who carved out a long NFL career through perseverance, Skipper has become a fan favorite in Detroit and a reliable depth piece along the offensive line.

Major Impact on the Lions’ Offensive Line

If both players decide to retire, the Lions would face a significant challenge—especially if Decker steps away. His departure would leave a massive void at left tackle, one of the most critical positions on the offensive line.

As Detroit enters a pivotal offseason, the futures of Decker and Skipper will be closely watched. Regardless of what comes next, both veterans leave behind legacies defined by toughness, resilience, and commitment to the Lions.
