Detroit Lions

Where do the Detroit Lions stand in the packed NFC race?

By playoff seeding, the Detroit Lions currently sit in the fifth position. Technically, the Green Bay Packers lead both the division and the conference with their 4-1-1 record, since a tie counts as a half-win—meaning 4.5 wins in six games equals a better percentage than five wins in seven.

But playoff seeding only tells part of the story. Let’s shift from the technical standings to the eye test for a moment.

Right now, the NFC is loaded with legitimate Super Bowl contenders. The Packers may occupy the top seed, but it feels like nearly half a dozen teams are playing better football than Green Bay, including the 49ers, Rams, Seahawks, Buccaneers, and Lions. So the big question is:

Where do the Lions actually rank in the NFC after seven weeks?

My take: They absolutely have an argument for the number-one spot after their Monday night victory over Tampa Bay. Yes, the Packers beat Detroit earlier, but week to week, Green Bay hasn’t looked like the superior team.

The 49ers’ ability to battle through injuries is admirable, but they have only a +7 point differential. The Rams look incredibly strong to me—their offense is explosive, their defensive front is dominant, and their +58 point differential ranks fourth in the league and second in the NFC behind the Lions. The Seahawks trail just behind at +57.

Still, I’m placing the Lions at number one. Maybe it’s some bias, but they just seem capable of winning in every possible way—whether it’s a defensive shutdown, a tough, physical offensive game, or even big plays on special teams. They can adjust to any opponent, and that makes them dangerous every week.

After Detroit, my NFC ranking would be the Rams, Seahawks, 49ers, Buccaneers, Packers, and Eagles—in that order.
