Why Former Lions QB David Blough Taking Commanders OC Job Is Actually Good News for Detroit

David Blough is officially off the Detroit Lions’ offensive coordinator shortlist, but Lions fans might have reason to celebrate.

The former Lions backup quarterback is set to be named the next offensive coordinator of the Washington Commanders, according to multiple reports. Blough’s departure clears the way for Detroit to pursue other top offensive minds, including former Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, who is also in the running for the Tennessee Titans head coaching job.

Blough’s NFL and Coaching Background

Blough, a Purdue alum from Texas, ranks ninth on the Big Ten’s all-time passing leaderboard with 9,734 yards from 2015–2018. After going undrafted in 2019, he briefly signed with the Cleveland Browns before joining the Detroit Lions late that season.

During his NFL career, Blough:

Started five games for the Lions, throwing 4 touchdowns and 6 interceptions

Played two more games over two years for Detroit

Started two games for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022

Finished on Detroit’s practice squad in 2023

After retiring, Blough quickly climbed the coaching ranks, earning praise from Lions head coach Dan Campbell:

“He’s smart, he knows where to go with the football, and he commands the huddle well. He’s just a hell of a dude. He’s doing a good job, competing with the rest of those guys.” – Dan Campbell, 2021

What This Means for the Lions

With Blough moving to Washington, Detroit can focus fully on securing Mike McDaniel or other top offensive coaching candidates. McDaniel’s innovative offensive approach could be a game-changer for a Lions team looking to bounce back after a 9–8 season.

Other candidates reportedly set for interviews include Seahawks coach Jake Peetz and Ravens wide receiver Tee Higgins, signaling Detroit’s commitment to finding the right offensive leader.

Meanwhile, the Commanders parted ways with former offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury after he helped lead Washington to a 12–5 record and an NFC Championship Game appearance, which included a notable victory over Detroit.

Blough’s rise to an NFL offensive coordinator position may have ended his direct involvement with the Lions, but it ultimately strengthens Detroit’s chances to land a top-tier offensive mind and revamp their play-calling for the 2026 season.
