Wife of Detroit Lions’ Dan Campbell Reveals She Sometimes Hides in the Suite Bathroom During Games (Exclusive)

Holly Campbell, wife of Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell, opens up to PEOPLE about her collection of “wild” superstitions — the ones that seem to bring luck and the few that had to be retired.

Holly Campbell, 50, and her husband, Lions coach Dan Campbell, 49, have been married since 1999.

Reflecting on their enduring marriage, Holly jokes to PEOPLE, “At this point, we’re pretty much grandfathered in.”

After more than twenty years by Dan’s side, Holly says she’s experimented with plenty of pregame rituals — and now she’s sharing which ones have stood the test of time.

While game day excitement fuels fans, it’s often nerve-racking for coaches, players, and their loved ones watching from the sidelines.

Holly Campbell, the devoted wife of Lions head coach Dan Campbell, admits she’s anything but calm during games — relying on a few unique superstitions to manage her nerves.

For home matchups, the 50-year-old makes it a point to arrive early, heading down to the field an hour before kickoff for the couple’s signature pregame kiss.

If she’s unable to attend in person, the pair keeps their tradition alive with a FaceTime call before the opening play.

“I mean, that’s non-negotiable,” Holly tells PEOPLE exclusively.

When the Lions take the field at Ford Field, Holly cheers them on from a suite — though her viewing style is far from ordinary.

“If things start going wrong, I get sent to the bathroom,” she laughs, noting that there’s one inside the suite.

.The ritual gives her a tiny sense of control over the unpredictable chaos happening on the field.

“It’s like a timeout. I’ll just sit on the toilet, watch the Gamecast on ESPN, and wait to hear the crowd before I come out.”

.Her friends and family have embraced the tradition, playfully ushering her in and out of the stall depending on how the game unfolds. “I can’t argue with it — it works,” she admits.

When bad luck strikes, Holly carefully notes what outfit she wore that day and retires it, saying, “It’s on ice for a while. I’m not putting that back on anytime soon.”

Years ago, when Dan played tight end for the Lions from 2006 to 2008, Holly wore a bracelet engraved with his jersey number, 89.

However, with the team enduring a losing streak, she says she refused to take off the sentimental accessory.

Determined to cleanse it of bad energy, Holly decided to boil the bracelet. “It’s ridiculous! Totally ridiculous!” she says, laughing that only other football wives would understand.

“I think we actually won the next game,” she adds. “So there’s definitely something to it!”

For nearly two decades, Holly’s parting words to Dan before every game were, “Do a good job” — a phrase born from their first date watching Armageddon. “You know that scene where Steve Buscemi’s going crazy, and they’re yelling, ‘Do a good job, do a good job,’ before the explosion?” she recalls.

What began as an inside joke eventually became a staple of their pregame routine, even through Dan’s rocky first year as head coach in 2021.

That season, Detroit lost ten straight before finally pulling off a win against the Minnesota Vikings.

“The day we won, I forgot to say it — for the first time ever,” Holly says. “And look how things turned around. Maybe it really was me the whole time.”

This season, the Lions have kicked things into gear with a strong 4–2 record.

After stumbling in their opener against the Green Bay Packers, they’ve stormed back to defeat the Chicago Bears, Baltimore Ravens, Cleveland Browns, and Cincinnati Bengals. And with a grin, Holly says the team’s ready to “go all the way.”
