Tigers President Remains Confident Despite Losing Alex Bregman

The Detroit Tigers made a strong attempt to sign free-agent third baseman Alex Bregman but ultimately fell short. Despite missing out, team president Scott Harris remains unfazed by the outcome.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Harris acknowledged that the Tigers presented Bregman with a “very compelling offer” but understood the possibility that he might choose another team. In the end, Bregman opted to sign with the Boston Red Sox. Harris emphasized that the Tigers prioritize players who genuinely want to join their organization and expressed confidence in his team’s ability to succeed without Bregman.

“We’re going to be just fine without Alex Bregman,” Harris stated. “This clubhouse just reached the postseason and defeated a team that had Bregman, so we know it’s possible.”

Detroit faced Bregman and the Houston Astros in last October’s AL Wild Card series, sweeping the Astros in two straight games in Houston. Bregman went 3-for-8 in the series.

Reports suggest that the Tigers’ offer was highly competitive and may have been the best in terms of long-term security. However, Boston’s proposal, while shorter in duration, featured a higher annual salary—enough to convince Bregman to join the Red Sox.

While Detroit strengthened its pitching staff earlier in the offseason, Gleyber Torres remains their only significant addition among position players. This could be a challenge as they head into the new season, but the Tigers remain confident in their ability to return to the playoffs without Bregman.
