Chiefs Still Facing Heat From Lions Over Officiating Controversy

Some controversies just refuse to die down, and this appears to be one of them. It’s been several days since the Kansas City Chiefs faced off against the Detroit Lions on Sunday Night Football on October 12, yet the NFL is still buzzing about nearly everything that took place during the matchup. The Chiefs regained their status as the league’s golden team with a 30-17 victory over the Lions, but it wasn’t exactly a clean or drama-free win. Following the game, plenty of tension lingered.

Of course, the major headline involved a scuffle that broke out after the final whistle. Following the game, Lions defender Brian Branch appeared to ignore Mahomes and struck Chiefs receiver Juju Smith-Schuster, sparking a chaotic altercation. It’s unfortunate to witness this kind of fighting in the NFL. The sport is physical enough without unnecessary brawls on top of it. For his involvement, the NFL handed Branch a one-game suspension.

Afterward, Mahomes told reporters, “We handle business between the whistles. They can focus on all the extra stuff they want, but we stick to football. We thought we played a great game today, and we’re keeping the momentum rolling.”

But there was another issue that drew plenty of attention. During the game, Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff ran in for a touchdown on a trick play that the officials later reversed. Now, head coach Dan Campbell is speaking out about it.

Here’s what went down. Early in the contest, Goff connected on a scoring play, but the referees wiped it off the board after determining that Detroit hadn’t properly executed the trick play. The penalty flag came unusually late, adding confusion and frustration on the Lions’ sideline. Ultimately, the touchdown was nullified, and that turned the tide.

Campbell addressed the situation during his Wednesday, October 15, appearance on 97.1 FM The Ticket. On air, he claimed that he was informed the league office in New York City had contacted the on-field officials to overturn the touchdown. However, referee Craig Wrolstad told the media after the game that no such communication came from New York. So, what’s the truth?

Regardless, the Detroit Lions have found yet another reason to complain about the outcome. They also pointed out that the Chiefs were barely flagged all night, while Detroit was penalized repeatedly.

Detroit Lions Player Calls Out Referees

Following the game, Lions safety Kerby Joseph voiced his frustration on social media, posting on his X account a reaction image showing his disapproval over how a near incompletion by Travis Kelce was ruled a catch. In another post, he criticized officials for missing what looked like a holding call on Kelce as the Chiefs converted for a first down. Joseph even shared a photo of Mahomes chatting with a referee during the game.
