Detroit Lions Host Veteran WR Scotty Miller as Chicago Bears Also Show Interest

The Detroit Lions continue exploring wide receiver depth this offseason, and a familiar NFC North rival could be competing for the same player.

According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the Lions recently hosted veteran wide receiver Scotty Miller for a free-agency visit. Schefter also reported that Miller is scheduled to work out next week with the Chicago Bears, whose head coach is former Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson.

Scotty Miller’s NFL Career and Production

Miller spent the past two seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where his role was limited. Across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, he recorded 14 receptions for 131 yards.

The veteran receiver’s best year came in 2020 while playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and quarterback Tom Brady. That season, Miller posted career highs with 33 catches, 501 receiving yards, and three touchdowns.

Now entering his eighth NFL season, the 28-year-old receiver has appeared in 93 games, totaling 99 receptions for 1,216 yards and six touchdowns.

Lions Continue Adding Receivers

During the 2026 NFL Draft, Detroit selected Kendrick Law from University of Kentucky in the fifth round (No. 168 overall). Law became the fifth wide receiver drafted by the Lions since 2021.

Detroit’s current starting wideouts are Amon‑Ra St. Brown and Jameson Williams, while former third-round pick Isaac TeSlaa continues to develop as a young contributor.

Unlike previous years, the Lions have not signed additional receivers through undrafted free agency. That could indicate a preference for adding experienced depth, which makes Miller a logical option.

Potential Role for Miller in Detroit

If signed, Miller would bring valuable veteran experience to Detroit’s receiver room. He could also contribute in multiple areas, including special teams.

During his final season with Tampa Bay in 2022, Miller played 258 offensive snaps and a career-high 133 special teams snaps. He later logged 267 offensive snaps and 107 special teams snaps with the Atlanta Falcons in 2023.

Although his special-teams role decreased with Pittsburgh, Miller still averaged 184 offensive snaps per season from 2024–2025 and returned two punts last year.

Bears Could Compete for Miller

Detroit’s interest becomes even more intriguing because the Chicago Bears are also evaluating Miller.

Since hiring Ben Johnson, Chicago’s offensive system has similarities to Detroit’s scheme. That familiarity has led the Bears to pursue several players previously connected to the Lions.

If the Lions want to secure Miller, signing him before his Chicago workout could help avoid losing him to a division rival.

Lions Wide Receiver Depth Chart

Currently, Detroit has nine receivers on its offseason roster:

  • Amon-Ra St. Brown
  • Jameson Williams
  • Isaac TeSlaa
  • Kendrick Law
  • Tom Kennedy
  • Greg Dortch
  • Dominic Lovett
  • Malik Cunningham
  • Jackson Meeks

Adding Miller would give the Lions another experienced option in a receiver group built around speed, versatility, and depth.
