Commanders’ Frankie Luvu Avoids Suspension, Fined $100K and Cleared to Face Lions

Washington Commanders linebacker Frankie Luvu will be available for Sunday’s matchup against the Detroit Lions after the NFL decided to overturn his one-game suspension and instead impose a $100,000 fine, the league announced Tuesday evening.

The appeal was reviewed and ruled on by hearing officer Derrick Brooks.

Luvu initially received a one-game suspension Monday for multiple violations involving dangerous tackling techniques. The punishment stemmed from repeated use of hip-drop tackles, the most recent occurring in Sunday’s Week 9 loss to the Seattle Seahawks. It marked the third time this season Luvu has been flagged for the same type of hit — having previously been fined for incidents in Weeks 4 and 8.

The reduction means that while Luvu will take a financial hit, he won’t miss any playing time. If the suspension had stood, he would have lost approximately $508,000 in game-day pay.

Now in his eighth NFL season and second year with Washington, the 29-year-old linebacker has started all nine games this season, recording 50 tackles, two sacks, and four tackles for loss.
