A recently surfaced video appears to change the narrative surrounding the altercation between Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and Washington Commanders defensive lineman Daron Payne.
Payne was tossed from Sunday’s matchup against Detroit and later handed a one-game suspension by the NFL after striking St. Brown during Washington’s 44–22 loss at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Initially, Payne seemed to be the clear aggressor, as cameras caught him throwing a punch at St. Brown’s face.
However, after the game, Commanders lineman Javon Kinlaw insisted that St. Brown had instigated the confrontation by hitting Payne first, calling the officials’ decision to eject only Payne “some bulls—.”
On Tuesday, another angle of the incident emerged, seemingly backing Kinlaw’s account. The new clip shows St. Brown taking a swing at Payne right in front of an official before Payne retaliated. Payne later reposted the video to his Instagram story with a sarcastic caption reading, “Oh ok.”
As often happens in such situations, the player who retaliates ends up getting punished, and Payne appeared to be that player this time. Given the new footage, though, many fans believe St. Brown should have been penalized or even ejected as well, since the referee was clearly in position to see the initial punch.
Early reports suggested Payne’s frustration stemmed from St. Brown’s touchdown celebration, but the latest video evidence suggests there was much more to the exchange than that.
