Detroit begins the practice week with a long injury list, highlighted by a new toe issue for Brian Branch
The Detroit Lions opened the week with a walkthrough instead of a regular practice, which led to an extensive projected injury report.
Five players were listed as non-participants: cornerback Terrion Arnold (concussion), safety Brian Branch (toe), left tackle Taylor Decker (shoulder), safety Kerby Joseph (knee), and right tackle Penei Sewell (ankle).
Head coach Dan Campbell said Arnold is still considered day-to-day, but he’s optimistic about Branch being available as the week progresses.
Another group of players was estimated as limited: Marcus Davenport (shoulder), Graham Glasgow (knee), Josh Paschal (back), Tate Ratledge (knee), D.J. Reed (hamstring), Isaac TeSlaa (oblique), Sione Vaki (ankle), and Brock Wright (ankle).
While estimated reports from walkthroughs shouldn’t cause serious concern, seeing 13 players listed as limited or out isn’t exactly ideal.
Arnold remains in concussion protocol after sitting out last week. The second-year defensive back has already missed three games and has been knocked out early in five of the seven he’s played this season. Decker continues to battle shoulder problems but has pushed through since returning from a two-game absence. Sewell has also appeared on recent injury reports while still managing to play.
Branch’s toe issue is new. The injury seemed to occur during a hard hit — the same play that resulted in a personal foul call — in Philadelphia.
Davenport, Reed, and Paschal are all still working through their 21-day return windows. Reed appears to be trending toward playing this week after being out since Week 4 against Cleveland.
“D.J. Reed looks pretty positive,” Campbell said Monday. “We’ll get him a full week of work and see where he’s at. And Davenport is improving too.”
Campbell noted that Reed and Malcolm Rodriguez are currently the closest players to making a full return.
Rookie lineman Miles Frazier practicing fully is another promising development after missing the entire preseason and training camp with a knee issue. His availability could give Detroit’s struggling offensive line another option.
Rodriguez (knee) was a full participant as well, one day after being activated from the PUP list. He used the entire 21-day window but is expected to be ready for this weekend’s matchup with the New York Giants.
Full-participation estimates also included running back Jacob Saylors (back), Frazier (knee), and receiver Kalif Raymond (cramping).
