Shocking news Jahmyr Gibbs Lifts Lions to OT Win Despite a Night Filled With Costly Mistakes
In a high-stakes showdown, Jahmyr Gibbs stepped up in dramatic fashion to lift the Detroit Lions to a 34–27 overtime victory over the New York Giants. He exploded for 264 yards from scrimmage and scored three touchdowns, including a blistering 69-yard rush on the very first play of overtime.
Detroit had trailed 27–17 with just over 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the team rallied to score 17 unanswered points and force overtime. In the waning seconds of regulation, kicker Jake Bates drilled a career-tying 59-yard field goal to tie the game and send it into extra time.
Then came the overtime play: quarterback Jared Goff handed the ball off to Gibbs, who burst through a massive hole forged by the offensive line and raced past defenders for the game-winning touchdown.
Gibbs’s day was nothing short of phenomenal: he ran 15 times for 219 yards, hauled in 11 passes for 45 yards, and scored twice as a runner plus once as a receiver. His coach, Dan Campbell, didn’t hide his admiration — calling Gibbs’s performance a major bailout for the team.
For the Giants, mistakes piled up. Their interim head coach, Mike Kafka, opted to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 6-yard line, rather than kick a field goal, but the play failed. Later, in overtime, Jameis Winston was sacked on fourth down by Aidan Hutchinson, turning the ball over and sealing the game.
Goff ended the match 28-of-42 for 279 yards with two touchdowns, while Amon-Ra St. Brown was his leading receiver, gathering nine catches for 149 yards. Meanwhile, the Giants’ offense wasn’t quiet: Winston threw for 366 yards, managed two scoring passes, and even caught a touchdown on a trick play — but it wasn’t enough.
After the win, Gibbs called the game a “must-win” for Detroit, emphasizing how crucial the next several games are as they vie for a playoff spot.
