Jahmyr Gibbs powered the Lions to an overtime victory, erupting for 219 rushing yards and sealing the game with a 69-yard touchdown run that ended the contest instantly. While Detroit looked sluggish for much of the afternoon, Gibbs played at a different speed.
Despite New York controlling the flow for most of the matchup, the game swung on a controversial call by interim coach Mike Kafka. Holding a three-point lead late in regulation, the Giants chose to go for it on fourth-and-goal instead of kicking a field goal. Detroit stuffed the attempt, marched down the field, and Jake Bates drilled a 59-yarder to tie the score and force overtime.
The Giants won the OT coin toss and surprisingly opted to kick. Detroit’s offense needed just one snap: Gibbs took the handoff and breezed through a wide-open lane, sprinting untouched to the end zone. Under the league’s updated overtime format, New York still received a possession, but it ended with Aidan Hutchinson bringing down Jameis Winston on fourth down, securing the Lions’ win.
Winston put up impressive numbers despite the loss, completing 18 of 36 passes for 366 yards, throwing for two touchdowns, and tossing one interception. He also caught a touchdown on a trick play. Wan’Dale Robinson turned in a standout performance as well, grabbing nine passes for 156 yards and a score.
Detroit ultimately did enough to improve to 7-4, while the Giants slipped to 2-10 as their season continued to unravel.
