Joe Burrow couldn’t resist taking a playful swipe at Matthew Stafford’s past Thanksgiving struggles as he prepares for his own first appearance on the holiday stage.
Though Stafford was long a staple of the NFL’s Thanksgiving slate during his time with the Detroit Lions, it has been years since he last played on that day. Burrow, meanwhile, is gearing up for his Thanksgiving debut this week after missing time since Week 2 due to surgery for turf toe. While speaking with reporters, the Cincinnati Bengals quarterback reminisced about watching Stafford’s holiday matchups as a kid—and slipped in a lighthearted jab at the former Lions star, now leading the Los Angeles Rams.
Burrow explained that, like many families, his Thanksgiving routine involved eating with relatives before settling in front of the TV, where football was usually the only thing on. He recalled that the Lions were almost always part of the broadcast, with Stafford routinely piling up 300 or 400 passing yards while connecting with Calvin Johnson, yet often ending up on the losing side. Still, Burrow said those games were entertaining and helped inspire his own desire to one day be the quarterback playing under the bright lights of Thanksgiving.
