The Detroit Lions escaped with a victory over the New York Giants on Sunday, November 23, although the performance left plenty to be desired. The Giants—playing under an interim coach, relying on a backup quarterback, and missing several key starters—pushed Detroit into overtime, which raised eyebrows. Still, Detroit prevailed 34–27, and at this point in the season a win is all that matters.
With that result, the Lions head into their Thanksgiving matchup against the Green Bay Packers at 7–4 instead of 6–5, a meaningful difference in a tight NFC North race. Green Bay remains a dangerous opponent, with Jordan Love keeping the team competitive and sitting just behind Chicago in the division standings. For Detroit, beating the Packers on Thanksgiving would be a massive boost in the playoff picture—a game that feels like a must-have.
One of the biggest reasons the Lions are in such strong shape is the emergence of Jahmyr Gibbs, who has become one of the most explosive players on the roster. And ahead of the holiday game, Detroit shared a major update on his recent performance.
Jahmyr Gibbs Sets New Detroit Lions Record
Gibbs delivered a monster outing against New York. According to ESPN’s tracking, he piled up 264 total yards, with 219 rushing yards on only 15 carries, plus three touchdowns. He also added 11 receptions for 45 yards, showcasing his versatility.
That performance officially put him in the Lions’ record books. The team announced that Gibbs now holds the franchise’s single-game record for scrimmage yards.
Fans on X were quick to celebrate, calling him everything from “a gem” to simply “good at football.”
Head coach Dan Campbell echoed the praise, describing Gibbs as “electric” after the game.
“He’s a game-changer,” Campbell said, while also crediting the offensive line and wide receivers for opening lanes and blocking downfield. According to Campbell, Gibbs wasn’t just moving the chains—he was a threat to score every time he spotted daylight. “He bailed us out today,” the coach added, calling him a true difference-maker with elite vision and explosiveness.
More Lions Making Their Mark
Gibbs wasn’t the only one rewriting the record books. Aidan Hutchinson hit the quarterback six times, the most in a single game in Lions history, a stat the team highlighted on social media the next day.
Quarterback Jared Goff also continued his steady production, extending his streak to 17 consecutive games with a passing touchdown, the second-longest run the franchise has ever seen.
Meanwhile, star receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown reached a major milestone of his own, becoming one of the fastest players in NFL history to reach 500 career receptions, accomplishing the feat in only 77 games—the second-fastest pace ever recorded.
