Several Detroit Lions Players Face NFL Fines

On Saturday, the NFL handed out three significant fines to players from the Detroit Lions.

During the season, the league routinely issues penalties to athletes for on-field rule violations from the previous week’s games. This week, the Lions were among those penalized.

The NFL emphasizes that fines are intended “to protect players from unnecessary risk and preserve competitive balance and game integrity.” The league also notes that it collaborates with the NFL Players Association to determine which rule infractions warrant accountability.

These latest penalties are connected to Detroit’s 34–27 overtime victory over the New York Giants. The close score was unexpected, given that the Giants were operating under an interim head coach and their starting quarterback, Jaxson Dart, was unavailable due to injury.

Three Lions players were cited for actions during that matchup.

The largest fine went to safety Brian Branch, who was penalized $23,186 for unnecessary roughness after hitting a defenseless player at 1:49 of the first quarter. Branch had been fined for a similar incident just a week earlier against the Eagles. Through 11 games this season, he has compiled 69 total tackles, five tackles for loss, and 2.5 sacks.

Linebacker Jack Campbell received a $17,389 fine for a hip-drop tackle, while offensive tackle Dan Skipper was fined $6,917 for unsportsmanlike conduct in the third quarter, specifically for taunting.

According to the NFL, all money collected from fines is directed to the Professional Athletes Foundation, which helps former players in need, and the NFL Foundation, which promotes health, safety, and wellness programs for athletes at every level, including youth football and local communities.
