ESPN Reveals the Lions’ Chances of Reaching the Playoffs Following Victory Over Cowboys
The Detroit Lions, led by quarterback Jared Goff, are fighting to keep their playoff hopes alive as the 2025 NFL regular season enters its final stretch. Sitting at an 8–5 record, Detroit remains one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the league but faces mounting pressure due to defensive struggles and key injuries.
After a statement 44–30 win over the Dallas Cowboys in Week 14, the Lions climbed to the top of the NFL in total points scored, showcasing a high-powered offense that continues to overwhelm opponents. While the offense remains elite, defensive inconsistencies have raised concerns about Detroit’s ability to close out tight games.
A major reason for Detroit’s offensive success is the play of Jared Goff, who has been the team’s starting quarterback since 2021. Aside from his first year in Detroit, Goff has consistently surpassed 4,000 passing yards each season. In 2025, he has recorded 3,334 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and a 56.5 QBR, keeping the Lions competitive in the NFC playoff race.
However, injuries have slowed Detroit’s momentum. Key players such as Sam LaPorta and Terrion Arnold have battled physical setbacks, impacting both offensive rhythm and defensive stability.
Once considered strong Super Bowl favorites, the Lions have seen their betting odds decline in recent weeks. According to ESPN projections updated on December 2, 2025, Detroit currently owns a 58% chance of making the playoffs, a 12% chance of winning the NFC North, and an 8% chance of reaching the Super Bowl.
As the regular season nears its conclusion, Detroit’s postseason fate will likely depend on whether Goff can continue producing at an elite level while the defense tightens up at the right time.
