The Detroit Lions enter a must-win matchup against the Los Angeles Rams as they fight to stay alive in the NFC playoff race without star safety Brian Branch.
Detroit currently sits as the No. 8 seed in the NFC, making them the first team outside the playoff picture heading into Week 15. With a record of 8–5, the Lions trail the seventh-seeded Chicago Bears (9–4) by one game in the NFC North. According to league projections, Detroit’s playoff chances sit at 53%.
Head coach Dan Campbell made it clear that the mindset in Detroit hasn’t changed from last season, when the team secured the NFC’s top seed and a first-round bye.
“Nothing has changed. You’ve got to win,” Campbell said during his Monday press conference. “We’re trying to get back to that spot, and all that matters is this one.”
Lions Coming Off Big Win vs Cowboys
Detroit is fresh off a crucial 44–30 win over the Dallas Cowboys at Ford Field, a victory that kept its postseason hopes alive. Campbell praised the team’s ability to play “complimentary football” and stressed that the standard remains the same as the Lions prepare for a tough road test.
The Lions will face the Rams on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. on FOX 2, with just four weeks remaining in the regular season.
Rams Enter as NFC’s Top Team
The challenge ahead is significant. The Rams enter the matchup with a 10–3 record and currently sit as the No. 1 seed in the NFC.
The game also brings a highly anticipated reunion with former Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, who is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career. Stafford ranks fourth in the NFL in passing yards and leads the league with 35 touchdown passes against only four interceptions. Detroit quarterback Jared Goff ranks fifth in passing yards.
Lions Adjusting Without Brian Branch
Detroit will be without standout safety Brian Branch, who suffered a season-ending torn Achilles during the Cowboys game. Campbell emphasized how much the loss impacts both the secondary and the locker room.
“Anytime you lose a guy like Brian Branch, it’s going to hurt,” Campbell said. “He’s an outstanding football player and a great teammate.”
To strengthen the secondary, the Lions signed veteran defensive back Damontae Kazee to the practice squad and are preparing to elevate him to the active roster. The nine-year veteran most recently played for the Cleveland Browns before being released to join a playoff contender.
Avonte Maddox Steps Into Bigger Role
With Branch sidelined, Avonte Maddox is expected to take over the starting role. Campbell praised Maddox’s performance after stepping in against Dallas.
The Lions are also monitoring the health of Kirby Joseph and Daniel Thomas, while Thomas Harper remains in concussion protocol but is progressing toward a return.
“We’ve got options. It’s not like we’re in dire straits,” Campbell said.
Lions vs Rams: A Critical Playoff Test
Detroit enters the game knowing there is no margin for error.
“This will be a big challenge on the road,” Campbell said. “That’s why you’re in it.”
With playoff hopes on the line and a red-hot Rams team waiting, the Lions will need another complete performance to keep their postseason push alive.
