Dan Campbell reacts immediately after Lions’ six-turnover collapse against Vikings

Detroit Lions head coach Dan Campbell did not mince words after his team’s season took a crushing blow in a turnover-filled loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Christmas Day.

Detroit’s 23–10 defeat at U.S. Bank Stadium dropped the Lions to 8–8 and officially eliminated them from playoff contention. The loss also extended their losing streak to three games and ended their hold on the NFC North crown, which they had controlled for the past two seasons.

The Lions’ downfall was largely self-inflicted. They gave the ball away six times—four lost fumbles and two interceptions—making it nearly impossible to stay competitive. Speaking after the game, Campbell expressed clear frustration with the mistakes that defined the night.

“You can’t expect to win when you turn it over six times,” Campbell said. “Our defense kept fighting and came up with stops, but offensively we hurt ourselves. The effort was there, but the turnovers were just too much.”
Detroit briefly found momentum in the second quarter when quarterback Jared Goff hit rookie receiver Isaac TeSlaa on a short touchdown pass to tie the game at 7–7. From that point on, however, Minnesota took control, adjusting effectively after halftime despite missing quarterback J.J. McCarthy.

The Vikings’ defense kept Goff under constant pressure. He finished 18-for-29 for 197 yards and one touchdown, threw two interceptions, and was taken down five times—one of his least productive outings of the season.

The result had ripple effects across the division. Green Bay secured at least a wild-card berth with Detroit’s loss and still has a chance to challenge Chicago for the NFC North title. For the Lions, the defeat marked yet another missed postseason opportunity, as they will now sit out the playoffs for the seventh time in the last decade.
